Agriculture Activities

Agricultural activities laid the foundations for what Highland Estates Limited is today when our founding father introduced subsistence rice farming in the Usangu plains of Tanzania. Farming is instilled in the roots of our Board of Directors and plays a fundamental role in the development and growth of our company, with investments in the sisal, rice, maize, cattle, fish and poultry industries.

In the late 1990s, Highland Estates envisioned an industry where the demand for sisal fibre will grow, and subsequently invested in two sisal estates; Ubena Sisal Estate and Pangawe Sisal Estate. With a combined area 9,000 HA, Highland Estates have the infrastructure and expertise to fully take advantage of the current upscale in the sisal market.

The next big agricultural investment in our portfolio was the purchase of the Mbarali Estate in 2006. Highland Estates now boasts one of the leading rice farming infrastructures in the country with 4,000 HA of fully operational and irrigated rice paddy plots. The company hopes to be at the helm of answering our Honourable President John P. Magufuli’s plea by endorsing the idea of having a Tanzania that can produce and sustain it’s own food supply.

The infrastructure at Mbarali Estate has enabled the company to further invest in beef ranching, poultry and fishery facilities, which will be fully operational by 2018.
